Dungannon: Hub of a dynamic network of communities

DUNGANNON is the administrative centre of Dungannon & South Tyrone Borough Council (DSTBC), one of Northern Ireland's 26 councils created in 1973. Click on the link below to visit the council website.

Dungannon & South Tyrone Borough had a recorded resident population of approximately 48,200 at the 2001 census - 60.5 percent of whom were registered as Catholic and 38.5 percent as Protestant.

Updated NISRA statistics for Population Estimates for 2005 show that Dungannon & South Tyrone Borough has achieved the greatest proportionate rise in population and is now listed with a population of 50,700.

Proportionally, the Borough is the region's strongest beneficiary of inward migration which is creating both a strong economic workforce and establishing Dungannon & South Tyrone as a diverse, global and multicultural location.

The Council area extends from the tranquil shores of Lough Neagh in the east through the beautiful Clogher Valley to Fivemiletown on the Co Fermanagh border in the west, and from the foothills of the Sperrin Mountains in the north, down to the Blackwater River and Moy bordering Co Armagh, and further south to the Co Monaghan Border with the Republic of Ireland.

The main population centres, after the principal town of Dungannon, are Coalisland which is the second town of the Borough, followed by the large villages of Moy and Fivemiletown. Other villages include Donaghmore, Aughnacloy, Ballygawley, Castlecaulfield, Moygashel, Augher, Caledon and Clogher; and key settlements include Aughamullan, Annaghmore, Ballymackilroy, Ballynakelly, Benburb, Blackwatertown, Brockagh, Bush, Carland, Cabragh, Cappagh, Carnteel, Clonmore, Clonoe-Dernagh, Crilly, Derrylee, Dyan, Edendork, Eglish, Galbally, Gortavoy Bridge, Granville, Greystone, Killeen, Killyman, Laghey Corner, Lisdoart, Murley, Newmills, Redford, Sess Kilgreen, Tamnamore and Washing Bay.

Dungannon & South Tyrone Borough Council has 22 elected members including a Mayor and Deputy Mayor representing the Borough. After the Council elections in May 2005, representation is as follows: Sinn Fein 40.9%, DUP 22.7%, UUP 18.2%, SDLP 18.2%. The Council is committed to equality and good relations in its role as civic leader for the Borough.
