Cross Border Retail Development Programme
The first of its kind this project aims to rejuvenate and regenerate the retail centres of Dungannon Town, Monaghan Town and Armagh City as well as facilitate the growth of retail support organisations in each area through joint cross border collaboration. The £123,000 Project is funded until June 2008 by the East Border Region Interreg IIIA Partnership with the three Councils also contributing. |
The project is managed by Dawn Park with support and guidance from the Project Steering Group with representatives from Councils, local Chambers, Retail Support Organisations and most importantly Retailers themselves.
Although the three city/towns are at different stages of development in terms of their respective offer and support structures one thing they all have in common is they all face increasingly stiff competition from more established centres such as Lisburn, Newry and Dundalk. Each area also has a retail support organisation; Armagh Chamber of Commerce, Monaghan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and Dungannon Life which need support and development. |
The project aims to develop and promote the retail sector in the three city/towns. This will be achieved by providing training specifically for retailers, supporting key events, encouraging networking and sharing of experiences across the three areas as well as joint marketing initiatives to raise the profile of the city/town centres both to the local population and beyond. This includes a joint Christmas campaign to promote the three retail centres both within the region and further a field. Looking ahead, the project will progress a retail development strategy for the region until 2010 and action plans for the local retail support organisations.
It is hoped that the series of pilot actions and specific training within this project will help create a platform for a new regional dynamic to be created.
