Tyrone Ladies Walking On The Wild Side For Charity

08/06/2011

Three Tyrone ladies set off recently for the adventure of a lifetime when they met up with a group of 15 other keen trekkers for a 10 day fundraising trek along the Tanzanian Great Rift Valley in aid of Northern Ireland's leading local cancer charity, Action Cancer, Shelly Bolton, Patrice Wilkins and Aislinn Eilian have all spent the last few months fundraising and training for this tough training challenge which is their first trek in aid of Action Cancer. They have successfully raised £3,500 each for the only charity in Northern Ireland to provide breast screening.

Shelly is from Legmurn Road, Stewartstown, while Patrice and Aislinn are from Blacktown, Newmills, Dungannnon.

The trek is in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area of Tanzania and the local Massai tribe will lead the group while sharing their local knowledge of the area.

The group will take on extreme temperatures of over 30 degrees and walk for up to eight hours every day covering more than 60km over the duration of the challenge.

The ladies will walk between the area's many craters and climb to the rim to view the local conservation life. They will camp in local villages and will scale nearly 3,000 meters to the summit of a live volcano.

The ladies will be helping Action Cancer to provide life saving services such as breast screening (40-39 and 70+), men's MOT health checks, health promotion for work places, community groups and schools, counselling and complentary therapy for people living with cancer as well as their families.

All services are available from the Action Cancer clinic in Belfast or regionally on their Big Bus. The local charity relies entirely on voluntary contributions and must raise over £3 million each year to provide its life saving services.
